There are few fashion 'rules' that I follow slavishly.
1. Red and green should never be seen - unless I'm feeling particularly festive.
2. Spending a little more on something that will last 'forever' or something you'll wear over and over is better than buying multitudes of cheap rubbish just to save money - I'm slowly coming around to the concept of 'investment shopping', though my budget doesn't really allow for investments along the lines of, say, a Chanel 2.55, or a Burberry trench.
3. Ultimately, if something makes you feel amazing and confident, then by all means stuff the rules and carry on.
These are my only fashion commandments. I don't believe that there's a checklist you can follow, bullet point by bullet point, to achieve perfect style without losing the whole essence of personal style itself and becoming a brainless mannequin. What I would (or wouldn't wear) may be someone else's nightmare. I'd say I'm fast becoming an obsessive-compulsive minimalist, so the designs of someone like Louise Gray, no matter how in awe I am of their vitality and fun, just wouldn't quite gel. But that's not to say that I don't admire them, or don't that they look incredible on other people. However, in the minefield of fashion rules that some people feel they have to tread through, there's one that really grates against my tolerance - 'black and navy do not go'.
I've never understood this one. I know 'scientifically' it's something to do with colour dominance (a bit like the red and green thing), and that black and blue fight our optic nerves for the most attention, but I personally love navy and black. The other day, a girl at work went to buy an outfit of uniform that was a blue and black ensemble, before being swiftly told that it quite simply: Did. Not. Go. Well, fellow workmates, let Rumi Neely be testament to the fact that navy and black can be total perfection.
Do you have any fashion rules you style by? And do you rebel against the blue and black thing too?

You look lovely darling, I was always told next mix black and brown but I do and it looks great together so hey! Forget the rules, you make your the rules as you go along...or actually! Maybe there are no rules.

woohoo congrats on winning the LOOK show tickets hun - ill see you there. I won last year x
ReplyDeleteI totally agree about the investment pieces, but I try to do it for items under £40 as I'm always on a permanent budget (la recession et al). But I don't really have any fashion rules, apart from thinking to myself "do I REALLY need this?!" whenever I need to.
ReplyDeleteOh and I love Navy and Black. :)
& Congrats on the Look Comp!

i've started to stick by that rule, buying something more expensive that will last longer than a billion cheap ones - so far i like it! i feel like i cherish the expensive stuff more than just abuse the cheap stuff just because its cheap.
ReplyDeletedouble denim...some people can pull it off and i am mega jealous, but i have never been able to do it!
i never wear gold and silver. i never wear black and brown/navy (however, rumi definitely pulls it off, i love it!)

i love this post. totally agree with the red and green rule! x
ReplyDeleteRules are there to be broken. Black and navy totally go together. In fact a lot of historical blacks were overdyed blues. Japanese farmers would dye jackets repeatedly in indigo until it was close to black - it kept the insects away and faded over time to give a nice 'black' with dark blue streaks. Any colour combination can work provided you get the shading correct.
ReplyDeleteWhere navy and black is concerned it's best to go with navy up top, simply because black is a visually dominant and heavy colour. You want the eye to be at ease - with black on top, it looks off. Generally speaking, it should get darker as you go down. Of course that rule itself can be broken, but it has to be carefully.
I wouldn't say red and green don't look right together although they do remind me of christmas lol!
ReplyDeleteHere is an outfit I wore that consists of the 2 colours x
