Elegant Affairs

I always a expect a lot of glamour from The Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute Benefit, and last night did deliver healthy doses of glamour, but what struck me most was the infallible elegance of the night. Apart from a few super glam gowns a la Doutzen Kroes, the majority of the dresses were simple, svelte and classic, to the extent that the princess gowns looked slightly out of place. 


Diane Kruger and Emma Watson chose to wear white. See what I mean about simple elegance? Diane pulled it off beautifully, and I loved Emma Watson's Burberry gown. Nice to see her in something, that whilst still modern, had a little sexiness about it. 

Metallics

The best of the metallics had to be those worn by Nicole Richie and Chanel Iman. Both looked gorgeous, but extra credit has to go Chanel for managing to do something a little different on the red carpet in her Michael Kors jumpsuit, while still making it look good. Fellow A-listers - start taking notes!

Zoe Saldana

Well, Zoe had to get a special mention because it's been so long since I've actually seen her do anything wrong in the style stakes, and last night was no different. Again she looked simply stunning in a Calvin Klein gown, and most importantly didn't looked like she'd tried too hard. Perfection!

Extra Glamour

The two who worked the ultra-glamorous look best had to be Anne Hathaway in Valentino, and Jennifer Lopez.  For me, Jen had to win it - no one can exude full on Hollywood glamour like she can and her Zuhair Muhad gown was outstandingly gorgeous. I'm also pretty sure we've seen Anne in something very similar to this before. Both were stunning though.

The Short Ones

A not very glamorous title, for not overly glamorous dresses. I still don't think shorter pieces deliver on the red carpet unless they're styled really well, and have something extra special about them. Blake Lively looked most Met Ball appropriate for me and hello! look at those legs! I really loved Chloe Sevingny's Proenza Schouler dress. Her nude make up was just right, and the colours looked stunning on her. Carey Mulligan wore Miu Miu, which I thought looked way too plain to be there. It was a pretty enough dress but the tights and plain old shoes dragged it down. Shame, because after the Oscar's I was really expecting something special.

Daydream

The spring looks are dropping into the stores rapidly now, and we're being told in abundance what we should be looking to wear in the coming months. However, what I haven't seen much of are the new beauty trends. As changing your hair and makeup is a far easier, quicker and cheaper way of updating your look now, if you're still embracing the Winter season, this might be a simple idea for you.

Whilst the heavy side plaits at Alexander Wang are sure to be a talking point soon enough, I loved the crimped curls at Diane Von Furstenburg. Created with multiple wet plaits (I gather from the photos at style.com), the look was classically girly, fun and pretty, and is something I haven't seen on the catwalk in a while. It looked perfect for that idealistic picture I create of spring in my head every year: green meadows, lots of daisies and lazing around in warm sunshine and gentle breezes, (maybe I should live on the set of Little House on the Prairie?). With added golden leaves and flowers intertwined in their hair, the models looked stunning, and the look was captured most perfectly on Arlenis Sosa.

Similarly to the plait seen at Alexander Wang, I loved the messy undone look seen at Miu Miu. I think hair extensions will definitely be in order come summer, but I might change the plait to a fishtail braid. I've always wanted to be able to do them, and have just learnt how!

So come spring time, I'll take the heavy fringe from Alexander Wang, the hip length plait at Miu Miu, make it my own with a fishtail and then undo it all later for the Furstenburg crinkles! Phew...sounds alot more complicated than I thought! ;)
