Fashion: New York Fashion Week F2012

My top 5...

It's always difficult cutting down the vast array of collections to my favourite few; harder still to choose my two top looks from each designer. I imagine if I were allowed to take two looks from each collection, what would I choose. The answers are above.

I've just arrived home from a fantastic weekend in London. Unfortunately I didn't get much LFW action, but I did get to see Victoria Beckham, Olivia Palermo, Anja Rubik AND meet Anna Dello Russo, which would be more than enough for me to conclude that 2012 has been brilliant....but we're only in month 2!

I feel so fortunate that I know what I want to do in life and that it's something that I feel so passionate about. Being in London feels more like being at home than my long-term hometown does, so I can't wait to move there later this year. It can't come soon enough.

New York Fashion Week SS12: My Top 5

A bit later than I wanted to post, but better late than never, right? Keep your eyes peeled for my LOOK Show posts as they'll be up as soon as I can catch my breath from this past week, which has been crazy, but amazing!

What shows have you enjoyed most so far?

NYFW A/W 2011: BCBG Max Azria and Richard Chai Love

I was sidetracked from writing the post I had originally intended to do today, when I saw the links to New York fashion week on style.com. It always feels strange to me to be looking toward next winter when we've barely even shed the layers of this winter, let alone gone through the natural motions of spring and summer. However, it's just the way the fashion world turns, isn't it? And admittedly, I was quite excited to have something new to look at this morning.

I'm usually a fan of BCBG Max Azria, but this season was a bit hit and miss for me. The white polo necks and less than desirable boots prevented it from being a totally covetable collection, however the colour palette  and layered dresses were really beautiful. There was the expected element of streamlined, simplistic design (which was actually created by said white polo necks), but the contrast of flowing, asymmetric, sheer dresses in stunning shades of coral and cobalt blue were the real show stealers for me. Though not to my taste, the polo necks paired with the loose, floaty style of the skirts and dresses, alongside the simple accessorising of a low-slung, slim belt, really made the style look very effortless and, more importantly, very wearable.

The other collection which really caught my eye was Richard Chai Love. There was a vein of grunge styling in the predominantly sooty grey and charcoal colour palette, and in the slouchy style of the jackets, trousers, and skirts. The striped dress really stood out as did the unusual, yet pretty, sheer lavender detailing across the bottom quarter of a grey dress. As always, I was drawn to the slightly masculine tailoring of the collection, probably because I just can't quite pull it off. Maybe autumn 2011 will be my season...

Jason Wu S/S '11

The Highlights:

Sheer blouses, and high waisted trousers.

Stunning cobalt blue.

Turbans (surprisingly).

Beautiful evening dresses, with skirts that I can't adequately describe without seeing them in person.

Softly, softly

OK, so it won't be one of the ones to mould 'the look' for Spring/Summer. It's not edgy and not really bringing something very new and fresh to the catwalk scene....but for timeless, classic, sumptuously elegant designs, there really is no where else. I did blog before, that I was looking forward to the Marchesa presentation. Simply for the girlish, red carpet glamour I can't help but love. It gave a nice break from looking at all the other collections...my little indulgence.

3.1 Phillip Lim

The collection I have been waiting for! One of my favourite designers, Phillip Lim, aired his collection on the S/S catwalk today, and it didn't disappoint. I've put a few of my favourite looks below, but it was hard to cut down the choice. The colour of his collection was predominantly a coral red, that reminds me of the lipstick colour choice seen on the models of Erdem. Some great coats and boxy jackets were seen, that I would love to get my hands on to see me through the cold season. A great, metal grey shirt was finished with feminine, negligee-esque lace detailing. The whole look was topped with a grey sweater that provided the perfect combination of masculine and feminine sexiness. 

Overall, I loved this collection. It had an effortless, casual, not-trying-too-hard essence about it that looked very cool.

Also, a pea-soup green is sneaking its way throughout the catwalks, that I can't decide whether I like or not; even in Phillip Lim's collection. What do you think?

 

The looks that made it for me:

Warm, sunny days

Not yet....but the NYFK S/S 2010 collections give a glimpse into the not too distant future of warm(ish) seasons. So we probably shouldn't expect scorching hot summer days or the kind of warm romantic evenings, free of a British serving of ice-cold breeze, where you can sit out by the sea until the stars come up. No, that would be too much wishful thinking, but the clothes will certainly warm up our spirits. Colourwise, there seems to be a border between the bright and vibrant, and the muted but more luxurious shades.

Vivid orange at Donna Karen in contrast to the richer and more opulent looking tones at Carlos Miele and Carolina Herrera.

There tended to be a play up of bold, bright colours followed by similar tones that were paler, but enhanced with a metallic edge, seen especially well at Caroline Herrera with the use of chocolate bronzes, gold and the orange as above.

Pink looks set to be big for Spring and was seen at most catwalks for today, including Barbara Tfank, Carlos Miele and Zac Posen.

P.S... Abbey Lee and Arlenis Sosa were particularly stunning at Diane Von Furstenburg. It was nice to see a smile going down the catwalk that captured the spirit of the collection perfectly.

And finally....PINK

I feel almost apologetic when I say I'm adoring the pink that's splashing it's way across the catwalk.... Pink seems to be that kind of colour that can trap a girl into a corner niche of hideous Barbie-esqueness.


I've never considered myself to be a 'pink girl', however after dissecting my wardrobe piece by piece....I have found quite an abundance of it lurking in the depths! I think there is some fundamental basis in a woman that makes you either love it or hate it! I've surprised myself this week to see I'm one of the former!  So how glad am I to see it gracing the models of Marc Jacobs at New York fashion week?! At least now I have a more solid reason for why I just have to buy just one more pink thing! It's bang on trend... :)
